Service isn’t about grand gestures or checking a box—it’s about how you show up with heart, presence, and purpose. Giving back might just be the most powerful way to move yourself forward.

When you think of giving back, what comes to mind?

Big charity galas?

Organized volunteer events?

Maybe even guilt-driven “service projects” you got roped into as a kid?

Yeah—same.

In our latest episode of Permission Slip Granted, we cracked open this idea of service and rebuilt it from the ground up. We asked bigger, bolder questions like:

  • What does giving back really mean when it’s not tied to guilt or obligation?

  • How do we teach our kids to be service-minded without forcing them into it?

  • What if service could be found in the smallest, most intentional acts—like a smile, a moment of connection, or holding space for someone who's struggling?

And maybe the biggest reminder of all: Service should fill you, not drain you.

💥 Some truth bombs we dropped:

  • Giving back doesn’t have to be a grand gesture.

  • It shouldn’t be forced—or it loses the magic.

  • Service isn’t just about money or big events—it’s your energy, your kindness, your presence.

  • If giving leaves you feeling resentful, drained, or unseen—it’s time to rethink the intention behind it.

  • You are already making a difference, often in ways you don’t even see.

🌱 Highlights From Our Conversation:

  • Kylee shared how growing up in a religious system made "service" feel mandatory—and how she’s re-framing that concept now through her work, her parenting, and her daily presence.

  • Kristin talked about teaching her daughter the joy of giving back through small, tangible acts like building Christmas stockings for a homeless shelter.

  • Sydney reminded us that service doesn’t always come with a paycheck—or even a formal thank you. Sometimes it’s a smile, a kind word, an acknowledgment that someone is seen and valued.

Ultimately? Giving back isn’t about checking a box.

It’s about connection.

It’s about intention.

It’s about waking up each day and asking: "Where can I pour a little light today?"

💭 Reflection Prompt:

Where are you already giving back—without even realizing it?And what small act of service could you offer today, just because it feels good?

ICYMI: I've teamed up with some fellow Jay Shetty Certified Coaches to create a space for more authentic stories to be told, more genuine support offered and more people letting shame go from their lived experience.

Permission Slip Granted (PSG) was born from that desire, bringing together 4 unique coaches/humans/women to share their incredible life stories, their joys, the pain and all the fuck words. PSG has really become a passion project for me, and I cannot wait to share it with more people.
